โToo often, weโre told we must fit neatly into one box. One title. One industry. One identity.
But careers are not binary. You can do more than one thing in your life.
Last week, I spoke with someone about the challenges of having more than one area of expertise. The reactions often fall into three categories:
I work in Biotech Quality,โ and then add, โI also do business coaching.โ Suddenly, the wheels turn: How can you do both? Doesnโt splitting focus mean youโre less effective?
An old colleague asks what youโre up to. You mention working with startups. To them, your value is accounting, so why โwaste timeโ elsewhere?
The most powerful response: you explain how your two worlds complement each other, making you more valuable to the clients you serve.
This isnโt unusual โ itโs the reality of modern careers.
Thereโs even a name for those who thrive across disciplines: ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ฆ๐๐ญ๐ก๐ฌ. Individuals whose knowledge spans many different subjects, often drawing on complex bodies of knowledge to solve specific problems.
When you cross-pollinate ideas from different fields, you unlock fresh perspectives. A team of only engineers or only business professionals risk groupthink. Add diversity of thought, and suddenly new solutions emerge.
The secret sauce is storytelling: showing how your past experiences fuel your current impact. Not everyone will understand โ some will always see people as static. Thatโs fine. Focus on those who respect and value the breadth you bring.
How have you blended different fields in your career?
๐โโ๏ธOr, if youโve faced skepticism when trying a new career or industry, how did you overcome it?
