Individual motivation is highest at the start of the year, yet itโs quickly lost when companies delay approving yearly goals, priorities, and performance expectations.ย
Many organizations donโt finalize their annual direction until late Q1 โ sometimes even Q2.
By then, the momentum employees started the year is gone, because they canโt guess and focus on the right work.
Projects stall. Priorities shift. New initiatives appear and disappear. All because executive leadership or boards havenโt aligned on the upcoming yearโs goals before the year begins.
From a coaching and organizational psychology perspective, ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐ฌ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฆ๐จ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ ๐ฐ๐ก๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐ฆ๐๐ค๐ ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ซ๐๐๐ค ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐ซ.
Here are three questions I use with executives and founders to keep motivation alive:

Three tips until the goals are set:
1๏ธโฃA new year doesnโt magically reset everything. If new goals arenโt set yet, ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐ค ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฅ๐๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ฒ๐๐๐ซโ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐๐ฌ ๐๐ฌ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐๐๐ง๐๐ก๐ฆ๐๐ซ๐ค.
I surprised leadership, because my team refreshed last yearโs goals, updated them and added them in early Q1 (not rocket science).ย
2๏ธโฃ ๐๐จ๐ฆ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ง๐ข๐๐๐ญ๐ ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ซ๐ฅ๐ฒ. If things must slow down or change, clearly explain why โ so you donโt discourage energized teams. No one wants to feel their time was wasted due to shifting direction.
3๏ธโฃIf many ๐ง๐๐ฐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฃ๐๐๐ญ๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐ ๐ฌ๐ญ๐๐ซ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ก๐๐ฏ๐๐งโ๐ญ ๐ ๐จ๐ญ๐ญ๐๐ง ๐๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐๐, ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐๐ซ๐ฒ.ย Ensure your senior leadership is aware of the ask, so they can help ensure you're not on someoneโs pet project that will soon get cancelled.ย No one wants to waste hard work for nothing, this kills morale.
