LinkedIn is supposed to help job seekers—but often, it does the opposite.




News flash: LinkedIn isn’t just a professional network—it’s social media. And with social media comes comparison.



I wrote a paper last spring titled “Identifying & Overcoming Stress and Competition When Applying for a New Role.”



💭 The idea came to me when a successful, senior-level client said they feel defeated applying for jobs on LinkedIn.


 🛠️ The paper details the pitfalls we all face in the 2025 job market… and offers scientifically proven strategies to overcome them!



Situation:


When you apply for a new role, it’s easy to slip into a threat state:


 • Seeing hundreds of applicants applied on a day-old posting


 • Assuming everyone else is more qualified


 • Then the self-doubt creeps in…



Cause:


Research shows this mindset shift—from approach (pursuing your dream job) to avoidance (fear of failure)—can sabotage performance. The N-Effect suggests the more competitors we perceive, the less effort we put in. LinkedIn’s vast network amplifies this effect.

 ✅ Mastery approach: Focus on being the best version of yourself, not beating others


 ✅ Stress reappraisal: See stress as energy to fuel performance, not a threat


 ✅ Social support: Surround yourself with people who remind you of your strengths



People change jobs 12 times on average (BLS, 2025). Don’t fear the process—embrace the possibilities! You should be excited and hopeful for the endless possibilities ahead.
